Application firewall
What is an application firewall?
An application firewall is a protective measure to filter network traffic. Normal firewalls typically use the source or destination, together with a port number. Application firewalls go one step further by defining if an application is allowed to communicate or not. For example, an application could be allowed to fetch required data and retrieve updates, but not retrieve advertisements.
